By Jake Mercer. Last updated: October 15, 2026. Race order and post times come from the Breeders’ Cup and can change. The Breeders’ Cup says final times will be announced October 21, 2026.
Big race: the $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, 1 1/4 miles on dirt, is scheduled for 6:16 p.m. ET Saturday.
Money: the 14 listed purses add up to $30 million, with $7 million on Friday and $23 million on Saturday. The Breeders’ Cup says purses and awards together top $34 million.
Start simple: win, place and show bets first. Exactas and other exotics cost more because they need several results right.
No live odds here: fields are not final, and the only official Classic odds are the Future Wager prices that closed September 27.

Treat the times as a plan, not a promise. The Breeders’ Cup says race and post times are subject to change and will be announced October 21. Coverage runs on USA Network, NBC and Peacock, with FanDuel TV and the Breeders’ Cup’s own channels streaming more, per the Breeders’ Cup viewing guide.
Which Breeders’ Cup Races Matter Most to Bettors?
All 14 races are Grade 1, but the money is not spread evenly. Here is the purse split from the table above:
Day
Races
Listed purses
Biggest purse
Friday, Oct. 30
5
$7 million
$2 million (Juvenile Fillies and Juvenile)
Saturday, Oct. 31
9
$23 million
$7 million (Classic)
Both days
14
$30 million
Classic is about 23% of all listed purse money
Saturday carries 23 of the 30 listed million dollars, or 77%. The Classic alone is 7 / 30 = 23% of the total. The $5 million Turf is next. The Breeders’ Cup’s own statement of more than $34 million includes awards, so it will not match the purse column.

The Classic is the race most bettors start with. For horses and prices, see our Breeders’ Cup 2026 Contenders to Watch. That page used September 15 prices from Covers when we last updated it, so check current odds before you bet.
Are There Official Odds for the Classic Yet?
Only one official set of Classic prices exists today, and it is history. The Breeders’ Cup reported that Forever Young closed as the 5-2 favorite in Future Wager Pool #2 when betting ended Sunday, September 27. Sovereignty was 9-2, Knightsbridge and Golden Tempo were 6-1, and Magnitude was 7-1. The Breeders’ Cup says the pool was a win bet with a $2 minimum and $134,658 in total handle.
Those prices are closed. They do not tell you what a horse will pay on race day, and a horse can still miss the race. A $2 ticket on Forever Young at 5-2 paid $7.68, according to the same release. A 5-2 price would pay $2 plus $5, or $7. The $7.68 payout is higher because the payout comes from the actual pool and posted odds are rounded.
How Do You Bet the Breeders’ Cup?
Horse racing uses pari-mutuel betting. Everyone’s money goes into one pool, the track or platform takes a cut, and the rest is split among the winning tickets. That means the odds change until the race starts. Our How Breeders’ Cup Betting Works guide covers each bet type in full. Here are the basics with made-up numbers.
Bet
What you need
Simple example (made-up numbers)
Win
Your horse finishes first
$2 on a 3-1 horse that wins returns $8: $6 profit plus your $2 back
Place
Your horse finishes first or second
Pays less than win at the same odds, because you have two ways to cash
Show
Your horse finishes first, second or third
Pays least of the three, but cashes most often
Exacta
Top two horses, in order
A $2 exacta costs $2. A $2 exacta box of two horses costs $4, because it covers both orders
Trifecta
Top three horses, in order
A $1 trifecta box of four horses costs $24
Pick 4
Winners of four races in a row
A $1 ticket picking 2, 3, 2 and 3 horses costs $36
Here is the arithmetic behind the cost examples. A box covers every order of your horses. Two horses have 2 x 1 = 2 orders for an exacta. Four horses have 4 x 3 x 2 = 24 orders for a trifecta, so a $1 box costs $24. A Pick 4 multiplies the number of horses you pick in each race: 2 x 3 x 2 x 3 = 36 combinations, so a $1 base ticket costs $36. Minimum bets differ by track and platform, so check yours.
Cost of a $1 trifecta box by number of horses. Example math only; minimum bets vary by track and platform. Calculation by DailyWagerZone.com.
The cost grows fast. Adding one more horse to a four-horse trifecta box makes it 5 x 4 x 3 = 60 combinations. That is 2.5 times the cost for one extra horse, as the chart above shows. Our bankroll management guide covers how to size stakes, and What Bettors Need to Know About Keeneland’s October Classic covers where to bet the card and beginner tips.
What Should a Beginner Do First?
Our take: start with win, place and show bets on one or two races and skip the Pick 4 and Pick 6 until you are comfortable reading a program. Exotic tickets cost more per race and need several things to go right. Pick a budget before Friday, split it across the two days, and stop when it is gone.
Where Can You Bet the Breeders’ Cup?
Horse racing wagering is legal in many U.S. states through licensed tracks and online advance-deposit wagering platforms. Offshore sportsbooks also post Breeders’ Cup markets. When we checked Bovada on October 15, its public sportsbook menu listed “Breeders’ Cup Futures,” “Fixed Odds Races” and “Horses Futures & Props.” We did not test deposits, limits or payouts, and we did not confirm racing markets at other offshore books.
Offshore books are not licensed by U.S. state regulators. Read the terms, limits and payout rules before you deposit. Bet only money you can afford to lose. If gambling stops being fun, call 1-800-GAMBLER.

How Do We Update This Page?
This is one permanent page for Breeders’ Cup betting. We update the schedule, the odds notes and the links in place as fields and post times become official, instead of publishing a new page each time. The “Last updated” date at the top shows when the information was last checked. If that date is old, treat the times and prices as stale.
